ISOPODS AND COMPARTMENT
ARCHITCTURE

ISOPODS

I stumbled upon isopods. I was immediately drawn to their other worldly, prehistoric, alien beauty. Whenever I look at isopods, I feel like they don’t belong on earth. When I saw the isopod for the first time, I happened to be Watching Nausicaa Valley of the Wind, a Studio Ghibli production. This film follows the life of a princess in a small post apocalyptic village, the world has been taken over with poisonous plants due to human pollution. The film covers many topics that I am currently interested in; dystopia, nature and the collapse of society and communication. In Nausica Valley of the Wind, the protagonist tries to protect a huge isopod like creature called Ohmu .This creature inspired me to investigate isopods. I was highly taken by their shape and structure as well as their prehistoric significance in our world.

Compartment Architecture
I researched the Tower of Babel, a tower that supposedly would be able to reach the heavens, In this tower of unified humanity everyone would speak one language thus work symbiotically. Initially I was drawn to the architectural imagery and visual similarities with brutalist architecture and the Kowloon walled city, practically The segmentation and division of the buildings. This idea that despite the buildings being built for community's and living there is an overwhelming number of walls. I have watched many documentaries on the Kowloon Walled City. I found it fascinating how, despite the arguably terrible living conditions, to the people that lived there it was home and they where devastated when it was demolished.
