Plaster, concrete, jesmonite. 70cm x 30cm (per bow)
The bow, a symbol of adolescent femininity is contrasted with solid materiality. Whilst concrete and plaster are harsh, strong and somewhat bleak, they are contorted to take the form of something associated with softness and femininity. Not only on an aesthetic level, but also on a material level, the materials themselves are a contradiction, the satin fluidity of ribbon and the cold unmoving concrete. On a conceptual level, this mirrors what it is to me to be feminine by appearance but hard and strong inside. To make these bows i made the first one out of clay and then made a mold with sillicon, and then cast them.
